Developing Strategies for Our Children’s Success

Summer Camp at The Green Vale School

Chess, Music, Soccer

250 Valentine’s Lane, Old Brookville, NY 11545

Monday - Friday, July 20 - 24, 2009

Time: 9:00am to 4:30pm

In our summer program, children are afforded a uniquely-structured opportunity to develop and nurture a love of chess, classical music and - above all - enhance their learning experience within an inspiring and fun atmosphere.  By reviving the pedagogic tradition of the legendary Botvinik School of Chess, the camp will offer high-level chess training programs for children K-12 devoted to the development of young players with strong tactical and strategic chess skills.  Each student will be individually evaluated to determine the best fit based on age and level of play.  In addition, all students will be coached on improving individual tournament skills by playing in simulated professional tournaments. We hope that students will emerge with enhanced awareness of the need for continuously improving their social aptitude and thus both one-on-one and group interactive skills, the value of discovering new friendships and bonding, and the challenge of balancing competitive teamwork with individual effort.  Special areas of training will be focused in terms of the students’ skills as grouped within three levels:

Beginners:  Students are encouraged to learn the ‘unique talents and capabilities of each chess piece – especially through development of familiarity with ‘endgame checkmating techniques and ‘middle-game tactics’ through fun and interactive play.

Intermediate:  Students will be coached on learning a series of tactical themes for different chess game scenarios, and will also receive more intensive exposure to concepts for effective ‘attack’ during the middle-game phase of a chess match. The intermediate-level curriculum will also provide the methodology for students to analyze their own games.

Advanced:  Students will master a range of strategic middle game plans in various type of positions. Selected strategic options for play will also be presented in the context of developing own opening repertoire.  Students will be assisted in adapting their individual strengths at the most logical stage  - the endgame, for instance by playing and analyzing the fundamental endgame positions in focus groups.  The advanced curriculum allocates time for self-study and individual coaching.

In addition to the main curriculum, the camp will host special sessions, where professional chess players will share their experiences gained while competing in World Championships. The camp will provide small group workshops.  We will have interactive sessions where students will play chess clubs from around the world.  We will also create the opportunity to have students educate their peers. Finally, we will be using various chess software programs to enhance strategy development and study world championship games using Smart Board technology

The classical music program is based on historical Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center NY Philharmonic "Symphony Concerts for Youth" teaching programs and features digitally re-mastered broadcasts by the legendary Music Director of the NY Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein. The orchestral matrix of instruments (as they collaboratively and competitively generate series of tactical and strategic auditory patterns that form great works of music from beginning-to-endgame) will be compared and contrasted with the visual pattern-recognition-driven art of chess.

In addition, students will receive athletic training at the camp. We will have professional soccer trainers working with the children each day.
